SIFNOS, GREECE

2021

Perched on the back of the peninsula that ends up on the historical beach of Fassolou, the hotel complex of NOS finds its roots deep into the tradition and nature of the island of Sifnos.

Following the precedent of village formations of the island, the hotel consists of a series of complex volumes scattered along the sloped landscape. A 270ο view opens up in front of it, highlighting the landmarks of Chrysopigi church, and further along the horizon revealing the islands of Folegandros and Antiparos that rise from the water, and altogether compose a unique frame for each room.

The natural elements lend their color hues for a composition perfectly blended into the landscape. The soft rendered volumes are tinted from the sunlight and the dry, low vegetation. The stonewalls follow the local traditional building technique,b bringing one stone next to the other in the characteristic way of Sifnos. Ceramic punctuation points could not be missing, in order to pay tribute to a craft so well-bred in the island, more than any other place, making burning red clay its own trademark.

The access to each room is filtered by a private courtyard, which showcases moments of relaxation like a plunge pool, and complements the veranda on the other end of each key. Depending on the room type, a range of amenities is on offer, from a lounge area for private dining, to a private pool and the sunbeds where one can enjoy the sun in privacy & peace.

Communal areas also take part in this choreographed experience for the guests, already from the reception which is set to receive visitors in a semi-covered patio, and sets the pace for a gradual immersion with this transition from outdoors to indoors, in a ceremonial fashion.

Crossing what resembles the network of narrow streets found in any village of the island, the guests arrive at the central square where a taverna and the communal pool are found.

Giving a clear nod to the traditional architecture of Sifnos, the building volumes are perforated with arched passages, as well as interior corridors, painting a soft framed view of the Aegean sea.

The artworks featured in each room are works of Joanna Burtenshaw, who was inspired by the local nature particularly for this commission.Instead of brushes, the artist used branches, dry weeds and other elements that are abundant to the surroundings, leaving a true footprint of the island itself on a volume of abstract depictions, adding to the direct links of the hotel to its place.

Deeply rooted in tradition and in the present, NOS proposes an optimistic identity authentic to Sifnos and to itself.
