Queen Bee is an all-day bakehouse in the center of Athens. Built in the 1940s the modernistic Art Deco building had been totally stripped of original features. By reviving its original elegance the new use of the space is rooted in the dignified history of its location. The colours, textures and natural materials are inspired by the era and updated with contemporary details. The focus of the space is the open kitchen finished with hand-crafted aqua tiles and separated from the dining space by a hanging blackened, brushed brass open shelving unit that showcases the kitchen activity, stores ingredients and displays the bakehouse produce. A floor of white marble and polished concrete terrazzo, the solid timber framed windows and a wall of antique mirror keep the space light whilst the ceiling of traditional Viennese woven panels absorbs reflected sound. The branding details such as the gilded signage and the inlaid brass plaque at the entrance are subtle highlights amongst the heavier lava stone tables and dark wood chairs. Together the elements glow from within an elegantly restored architecture that is now buzzing from morning to night.
