Scorpios encompasses an internal bar and lounge, open-air restaurant, extensive beach facilities and event areas. In collaboration with the project’s creative director Michael Schickinger and interior designer Annabell Kutucu, we looked for an holistic approach that would bring every element together harmoniously in a re-invention of the ancient socio-cultural concept of ‘Agora’ or ‘gathering place’. We worked closely together to develop the master plan and architectural language that would transform the rough, Cycladic terrain into an effortless flow through open and enclosed areas of laid back, unaffected luxury.
The main architectural challenge came in dealing with the steep, rocky, exposed site. We divided the site into terraces, from the focal point of the bar, restaurant and gathering spaces, working down to the shore with shallow steps and ramps. 6000sqm of space has been arranged to avoiding any dangerous drops or tiring climbs. External spaces take full advantage of the views whilst providing shelter and shade.
The results, newly built and refurbished, are infused with the honestly natural traditional materials and construction techniques found in Cycladic architecture, rooting it in its site and context. The spaces are enriched with organic textures and crafted objects collected by Michael and Annabell on their travels. The design result is an atmospheric experience that celebrates beach culture and transcends the various design disciplines to present a total experience that submerges the visitor from the master plan to its every little detail.
